NY Wired Program
NY Wired Certifies Fifty Area Youth for Summer Jobs

The Capital Region, like most parts of the United States, is about to face a major employment challenge. On-third of our workforce will retire in the next five to ten years. How do we find replacement employees? How do we make sure they are well trained and ready to join the workforce? One possible solution is to offer high school students an early opportunity to gain skills through meaningful summer employment. This idea fueled the concept behind what we know today as the "Career Ready Youth Program".

On June 8th at 3:30pm at City Hall, NY Wired graduates fifty youth from the Career Ready Youth Program, in partnership with the City of Albany, Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady County. Mayor Jerry Jennings will provide the Graduation address while County Executive Breslin will recognize the graduating students, outstanding performers and program partners.

In the third year of the program where high school students are trained via online courses on subjects like business etiquette, dealing with customers and co workers, using computer applications such as Microsoft excel, access, word. The youth are mentored by University at Albany college students, NY Wired personnel and Duanesburg Advantage After School staff.

This years participating agencies included the Albany, Bishop Maginn, Cohoes, Harriet Gibbons, Troy and Schenectady High Schools. The Duanesburg Advantage After School program and High School Participated in the program for the second year.

The Graduates are placed in companies for the summer in the students preferred area of interest. These students will be mentored by the companies or agencies and enjoy a memorable summer work experience. Funding for the summer salaries is paid for by the summer youth programs of the City of Albany and Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady Counties, in addition to funds from the Workforce Investment Act.
